What causes erectile dysfunction?

Experts once believed that psychological problems along with aging caused ED symptoms. Today's medical community disagrees. Researchers now say that most cases of ED are due to physical problems attributed to age.

The normal aging process is just one reason you might be experiencing erectile dysfunction.

Age

In men over the age of 50, primarily physical causes trigger erectile dysfunction. Erections require healthy blood vessels and blood flow to the penis. For men over 50, it’s normal for blood flow to the penis to become blocked.

You may have a deficient vein causing insufficient blood flow or atherosclerosis (arterial hardening). Hormonal imbalances are another common reason older men experience ED.

Circulatory disorders

Some conditions that trigger circulatory disorders and increase the risk of erectile dysfunction include:

If blood-supplying arteries harden, blood flow to your penis is disturbed. Arteriosclerosis can cause ED either by not supplying enough blood to your penis or causing blood to drain too quickly through your veins. You might even experience both.

If a circulatory disorder is the culprit, the blood flow in or out is no longer sufficient for a satisfactory erection.

Low testosterone

Low testosterone can lead to low libido and ED. If you have low testosterone, you could also experience:

At Balance Hormone Center, we work with you to create personalized testosterone therapies to help with ED. Some treatments may include:

BHRT is beneficial for erectile dysfunction because it works quickly with minimal side effects. It can improve sexual performance in just a few weeks.

Medication side effect

Your nervous system controls erections by directing blood vessel processes. Some medications interfere with nerve signals that would ordinarily trigger an erection. Medicines for depression, cancer, or high blood pressure can also play a part in ED.

Lack of vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for your overall health and well-being. Some studies indicate that a lack of vitamin D can lead to more frequent erectile dysfunction.

Vitamin D helps your body strengthen bones and process calcium. It’s also important for healthy nerves, muscles, and the immune system. A lack of vitamin D can reduce blood flow to the penis, which can cause ED.

A proper level of vitamin D can improve blood flow and reduce inflammation.
